The New Year is all about making resolutions and setting goals. But before you do that, there may be some things you need to let go of.
Day after day, month after month, and year after year, we accumulate things in our lives: experiences, transitions, feelings, possessions, relationships, and other things.
While planning for our future and looking ahead is important, it’s also important to examine our lives to see if there is anything we need to let go of.
Some of the things that we need to let go of are easy for us to identify.
Others are not.
The purpose of this article it’s a challenge you to take a close look at your life and identify what you may be holding onto that may be holding you back.
In his recent book, The Obstacle Is The Way, Ryan Holiday writes, “The obstacle in the path becomes the path. Never forget, within every obstacle is an opportunity to improve our condition.”
Ignoring personal limitations and obstacles doesn’t make them go away. The way to move forward is to face them and go through them.
Being Intentional About Letting Go
I have heard it said and seen from personal experience that people will stay in bad relationships rather than end them or build new ones.
I believe this is also the case with other aspects of life. It’s easier to stay where we are, even if we don’t like where we are than it is to change or do something about it.
Real change requires effort and hard work from us.
For most of us, unless someone is holding us accountable or usually not willing to do it.
Several years ago, I read a book related to the idea of letting go by Henry Cloud.
The title of the book is Never Go Back: 10 Things You’ll Never Do Again.
He talks about our tendency to repeat the same patterns and habits and make the same mistakes in life over and over again.
In the book, he outlines 10 realizations that successful people live by.Never again return to what hasn’t worked.
- Never again do anything that requires you to be someone you’re not.
- Never again try to change another person.
- Never again believe that you can please everyone.
- Never again choose short-term comfort over long-term benefit.
- Never again trust someone or something flawless.
- Never again take your eyes off the big picture.
- Never again neglect to do due diligence.
- Never again fail to ask why you are where you are.
- Never again forget that your inner life determines your outer success.
These realizations may seem like common sense. But they can also be an excellent place for you to start to identify what you need to let go of in your life.
